Lluís Donoso

Prof. Lluís Donoso was awarded the 2025 Alexander Margulis Gold Medal at the 16th IS3R Biennial Symposium

Prof. Donoso is currently President of the Foundation “España Salud”, Consultant at the Research and Innovation Department at the Hospital Clínic  Barcelona, University of Barcelona (UB), Corresponding Academic Member of the Royal National Academy of Medicine of Spain and serves as Director of
the UB–Siemens Healthcare Chair. He has had a distinguished career in academic radiology and clinical leadership, with a significant impact on medical imaging innovation and strategy.

Prof. Donoso received his MD and PhD from the Autonomous University of Barcelona School of Medicine and completed his radiology training at the Hospital de Sant Pau in Barcelona. In 1992, he was appointed Chairman of the Radiology Department at the UDIAT Diagnostic Centre at Corporació Sanitària Parc Taulí, where he later became Executive Director. From 2007 to 2021, he led the Department of Medical Imaging at the Hospital Clínic of Barcelona and from 2021 to 2024 served as Director of the Clinical Advanced Technologies Institute (CATI), a joint initiative of the Hospital Clínic of Barcelona and the Leitat Technological Center. His early research focused on abdominal imaging and liver disease, evolving over time toward digital imaging and the integration of IT in radiology. Under his leadership, the R&D team at UDIAT developed several patented technologies now widely used across Spain. He has authored over 90 scientific articles and seven book chapters and has lectured internationally at universities, congresses, and educational courses.

A prominent figure in international radiology, Prof. Donoso has served as President of the International Society of Radiology (ISR), the European Society of Radiology (ESR), and the Spanish Society for Medical Radiology (SERAM). Since 2019, he has also contributed as a commissioner to The Lancet Commission on diagnostics and The Lancet Oncology Commission on medical imaging and nuclear medicine.

Within IS3R, Prof. Donoso held numerous leadership roles: From 2019–2021, Prof. Donoso served as IS3R President and co-chaired the Program Committee of the IS3R biannual meeting held in Montreal in 2022. He was a member of the Executive Board from 2011 to 2023 and served as Treasurer from 2013 to 2015. In addition, he served on the Membership and Nomination Committee, Corporate Advisory Committee, and Publications Committee in over a decade of service.

Prof. Donoso’s achievements have been recognized with the Gold Medal of the Spanish Society of Radiology, the Gold Medal of the Catalan Society of Radiology, the Gold Medal of the Interamerican College of Radiology (CIR) and the Gold Medal of the ESR and honorary memberships in the radiological societies of Argentina, Chile, Mexico, Brazil, Sweden, Romania, Serbia, China, Italy, France, Germany, Radiological Society of North America (RSNA) and the Honorary Fellowship of the American College of Radiology (ACR).

His dedication to advancing diagnostic imaging, innovation, and global collaboration has made a lasting impact on the field.
