The IS3R Sam Gambhir Innovation Prize 2025 was awarded to Dr. Denis Le Bihan, CEA Research Director and Founding Director of NeuroSpin, for his outstanding achievements, contributions, and breakthrough innovations in the field of biomedical imaging. Prof. Le Bihan is recognized particularly for his pioneering research concerning diffusion MRI, a pillar of medical imaging that has revolutionized neuroscience and diagnostic medicine.
Prof. Le Bihan’s groundbreaking work in diffusion MRI has been a game changer for the management of stroke and has enabled functional neuroimaging. His contributions include the introduction and implementation of molecular diffusion imaging with MRI, the development of diffusion tensor imaging (DTI), and advancements in brain tractography using DTI. These innovations have significantly enhanced our understanding of brain structure and function, providing critical insights into neuronal network activation and brain dynamics.
Prof. Le Bihan received his medical degree from the University of Paris in 1984 and his PhD in Nuclear/Particle Physics from the University of Paris-Orsay (now Paris-Saclay University) in 1987. He has held numerous prestigious positions, including Visiting Professor at Kyoto University and the National Institutes for Physiological Sciences in Japan, and Director of the Federative Research Institute on Functional Neuroimaging in Paris.
Throughout his illustrious career, Prof. Le Bihan has been honored with numerous awards, including the Louis-Jeantet Prize for Medicine in 2014, the Honda Prize in 2012, the Eduard Rhein Foundation Award in 2021, the Gold Medal from the International Society of Magnetic Resonance in Medicine in 2001, the Lounsbery Award from the US National Academy of Sciences and French Academy of Sciences in 2002, the Louis D. Prize from the Institut de France in 2003, and the Antoine Béclère Medal of the French Society of Radiology in 2022. He is also a member of several esteemed academies, including the Academy of Sciences (Institut de France), the French Academy of Technologies, the Academy of Pharmacy, and the National Academy of Medicine.
